Exercise 8 Page 5

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

87/20

Practice makes perfect

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
9 110 9* 10+1/10 91/10
4 34 4* 4+3/4 19/4
When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 91/10 + 19/4 Since 20 is a multiple of 4 and 10, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 9110 by 2, and multiply both the numerator and denominator of 194 by 5 to create a common denominator.
91/10 + 19/4
91 * 2/10 * 2 + 19/4
91 * 5/10 * 5 + 19 * 5/4 * 5
182/20+95/20
Now that we have a common denominator, we can proceed to simplifying the expression.
182/20+95/20
182-95/20
87/20
