Make a table of values. Notice that the graph of the absolute value function f(x) is a V-shaped graph.
To graph the given absolute value function, let's make a table of values first!
x | |x-3|-1 | Simplify | f(x)=|x-3|-1 |
---|---|---|---|
1 | | 1-3|-1 | 2-1 | 1 |
2 | | 2-3|-1 | 1-1 | 0 |
3 | | 3-3|-1 | 0-1 | -1 |
4 | | 4-3|-1 | 1-1 | 0 |
5 | | 5-3|-1 | 2-1 | 1 |
We will plot these ordered pairs on a coordinate plane and connect them to get the graph of f(x). Notice that f(x) is a transformation of the parent function y=|x|, which is V-shaped. Thus, f(x) will also be a V-shaped graph.
Now, we can label special points of the graph — the vertex, x-intercepts, and y-intercept.
