Exercise 84 Page 553

Make a table of values. Notice that the graph of the absolute value function f(x) is a V-shaped graph.

Practice makes perfect

To graph the given absolute value function, let's make a table of values first!

x |x-3|-1 Simplify f(x)=|x-3|-1
1 | 1-3|-1 2-1 1
2 | 2-3|-1 1-1 0
3 | 3-3|-1 0-1 -1
4 | 4-3|-1 1-1 0
5 | 5-3|-1 2-1 1

We will plot these ordered pairs on a coordinate plane and connect them to get the graph of f(x). Notice that f(x) is a transformation of the parent function y=|x|, which is V-shaped. Thus, f(x) will also be a V-shaped graph.

Now, we can label special points of the graph — the vertex, x-intercepts, and y-intercept.
