Exercise 3 Page 331

Recall the definition of range and standard deviation of a data set.

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

The most common ways to describe the variation of a data set are by using the range and the standard deviation. These are called measures of variation.

Range

The range tells us over how many numbers the data extends. It is found by calculating the difference between the maximum and minimum values of a data set. Range=Maximum - Minimum Finding the range requires us to first put the raw data in order from least to greatest. Let's look at some example data sets to see how the range is found.

Standard Deviation

The standard deviation measures by how much the data values differ from the mean. The mean x is given by the sum of the data values divided by the number of observations. The symbol σ, read as sigma, represents the standard deviation. Let's review the process for finding the standard deviation.
