Exercise 14 Page 266

Create functions from the left-hand and right-hand sides of the equation.

x=-3

Practice makes perfect
To graph the equation 13x+5=-2x-2, we will create two functions out of the left and right hand sides of the equation. y=1/3x+5 and y=-2x-2

The x-coordinate where the graphs of these functions intersect is the solution to our equation.

intersection
The graphs intersect at x=-3, which is our solution. We can check our solution by substituting x= -3 into the original equation.
1/3x+5=-2x-2
1/3( -3)+5? =-2( -3)-2
-1+5? =6-2
4=4 âś“
Since the resulting statement is true, our solution is correct.
