And Compound Inequality
Practice makes perfect

Let's write our compound inequality for the given statement by making a table. Remember that no less than is represented by ≥ and fewer than is represented by <.

Verbal Expression Algebraic Expression
A number r r
A number r is no less than - 1.5 r≥ - 1.5
A number r is fewer than 9.5 r< 9.5
Combine the inequalities - 1.5≤ r< 9.5

To graph an and compound inequality, we will first consider the endpoints. In this case, the lesser endpoint is - 1.5 and the greater endpoint is 9.5. We also know that - 1.5 is included in the solution set, whereas 9.5 is not. Therefore, we will indicate these points with a closed and open circle, respectively.

Closed Open Points

The solution set lies in the area that is both no less than - 1.5 and at most 9.5. Therefore, we will shade the number line between the endpoints.
