Exercise 20 Page 649

What additional information about the triangles can you identify from the diagram?

Not enough information.

Practice makes perfect

According to the ASA Congruence Theorem, if two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent to two angles and the included side of a second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.

Examining the diagram, we see that the triangles share a side, XZ. By the Reflexive Property of Congruence, we know these sides are congruent in our triangles.

Also, if we view XZ as a transversal to ZW and XY, we can identify a pair of alternate interior angles. Since WZ∥ XY, we know these angles are congruent by the Alternate Interior Angles Theorem.

Let's add this information to the diagram.

In this case, we only know one pair of angles that are congruent. This is insufficient information to use the ASA Congruence Theorem.
