Exercise 23 Page 698

Consider the given information. Are 4 cards enough to make a conclusion about the whole set of cards?

No, see solution.

Practice makes perfect

We are told that in a bag there are 40 cards numbered from 1 to 40, which are either red or blue. The card is being drawn and placed back in a bag 4 times. Two red cards are drawn numbered 31 and 19, and two blue cards numbered 22 and 7. The friend draws a conclusion that red cards and even numbers must be mutually exclusive. Consider the information we are given.

Drawn Cards
Even Odd
22 31, 19, 7

The only even number we have drawn is on a blue card. However, we have no information about the rest of the cards. Among the other cards there can be a card which is red and also contains an even number. Therefore, we cannot make a conclusion that red cards and even numbers are mutually exclusive just yet. We would have to know the color and number on every card to do so.
