To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side, using the Properties of Equality. In this case, we will start by using the Addition Property of Equality to remove the variable term from the left-hand side of the equation.

- 6 x - 13 = - x - 23

$LHS + 6 x = RHS + 6 x$

- 6 x - 13 + 6 x = - x - 23 + 6 x

Add terms

- 13 = 5 x - 23

$LHS + 23 = RHS + 23$

- 13 + 23 = 5 x - 23 + 23

Add terms

10 = 5 x

Rearrange equation

5 x = 10

$LHS / 5 = RHS / 5$

\frac{5 x}{5} = \frac{1 0}{5}

Calculate quotient

x = 2

The solution to the equation is

x = 2 .
