We are given the two vectors u and v in a coordinate plane.

We want to show the addition of those two vectors graphically. We will label the addition vector as w. v + u = w To do so we will use the tip-to-tail method. In other words, we will draw the vector u at the tip of the vector v without changing its magnitude and direction. Let's do it!

Finally, we will draw a directed line segment from initial point of v to the terminal point of u to show the addition vector w.

This time we will find a scalar multiplication of the vector w by a number -0.5.

w ⇒ -0.5w Since we will multiply our vector by a negative number (other than -1), we need to change its magnitude by a factor of 0.5 and reverse its direction. In other words, we will draw the new vector by making the magnitude half of the original vector and in the opposite direction.
