Exercise 1 Page 549

Make a table of values and connect the obtained points with a parabola.

Graph:

Vertex: (0,0)

Practice makes perfect
We want to graph the given quadratic function. y=- 3x^2

To do so, we will make a table of values.

x - 3x^2 y=- 3x^2
0 - 3( 0)^2 0
1 - 3( 1)^2 - 3
2 - 3( 2)^2 - 12

Note that, since the given function has the form y=ax^2, the axis of symmetry is the vertical line x=0. Let's now plot the obtained points and their reflection across the axis of symmetry, and connect them with a parabola.

Recall that the highest or lowest point of a parabola is its vertex, which is on the axis of symmetry. In this case, we see above that the maximum point of the parabola is (0,0).
