Exercise 3 Page 489

Remember, only like terms can be combined.

11r^3+11

Practice makes perfect
The first step in simplifying this expression is to identify which, if any, terms can be combined. Remember, only like terms — constant terms or terms with the same variable — can be combined. ( 5r^3 + 8)+( 6r^3 + 3) In this case, we have two r^3-terms and two costants. Only the r^3-terms and costant-terms can be combined, so to simplify the expression we will remove the parentheses and rearrange it according to the Commutative Property of Addition, and then combine like terms.
(5r^3+8)+(6r^3+3)
5r^3+8+6r^3+3
5r^3+6r^3+8+3
11r^3+11
