Exercise 38 Page 136

Use the Properties of Equality to solve the proportion.

-3/5

Practice makes perfect
To solve the proportion we will use the Properties of Equality. Remember that we will need to treat m+1 as a single quantity in the multiplication process.
-3/m=2/m+1
-3=2/m+1 * m
-3*(m+1)=2* m
-3(m+1)=2m
We will continue solving for m using the Distributive Property and the Properties of Equality.
-3(m+1)=2m
â–Ľ
Distribute -3
m(-3)+1(-3)=2m
-3m+(-3)=2m
-3m+(-3)+3m=2m+3m
-3=5m
-3/5=m
-3/5=m
m=-3/5
