Exercise 1 Page 723

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

7/6

Practice makes perfect
When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 2/3 + 1/2Since both denominators are prime numbers, we have to multiply each fraction by the denominator of the other fraction. First we multiply the numerator and denominator of 23 by 2. Then we can do the same and multiply 12 by 3 to create a common denominator.
2/3+1/2
2* 2/3* 2+1/2
2*2/3*2+1* 3/2* 3
4/6+3/6
Now that we have a common denominator, we can proceed to simplifying the expression.
4/6+3/6
4+3/6
