Exercise 9 Page 629

Use the Distributive Property to combine the radical expressions.

7sqrt(5)

Practice makes perfect
Radicals can only be added or subtracted when they have like radicands. a sqrt(x) + b sqrt(x) = (a+b) sqrt(x) asqrt(x)-bsqrt(x)=(a-b)sqrt(x) Since in our exercise all of the radicands are alike, we will use the Distributive Property to perform the addition.
sqrt(5) + 6sqrt(5)
1sqrt(5) + 6sqrt(5)
(1+6)sqrt(5)
7sqrt(5)
