A transversal is a line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at two different points. Let's add some labels on the diagram.

We can see that angles ∠ 6 and ∠ 3 are formed by the lines s and t and the transversal p. They do not have a common side or a point, so the angles are nonadjacent. Also, these are exterior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal p. Therefore, they are alternate exterior angles.
