\frac{1}{2} - \frac{4}{5}

$\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \cdot 5}{b \cdot 5}$

\frac{1 \cdot 5}{2 \cdot 5} - \frac{4}{5}

$\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \cdot 2}{b \cdot 2}$

\frac{1 \cdot 5}{2 \cdot 5} - \frac{4 \cdot 2}{5 \cdot 2}

\frac{5}{1 0} - \frac{8}{1 0}

Now that they have the same denominator, we can subtract.

\frac{5}{1 0} - \frac{8}{1 0}

Subtract fractions

\frac{5 - 8}{1 0}

Subtract term

\frac{- 3}{1 0}

Put minus sign in front of fraction

- \frac{3}{1 0}
