Decide which conjunction connects the compound inequality and then focus on the two inequalities.
x<9 or x>11
Practice makes perfect
We have been asked to write a compound inequality given the graph. Since we have two lines which do not overlap, we are working with an or compound inequality. Now we need to establish which inequalities are represented by the graph.
The left inequality has an open circle on 9 and the line is shaded to the left. This tells us that we want all numbers less than 9. The right inequality has an open circle on 11 and the line is shaded to the right. This tells us that we want all numbers greater than 11.
values less than 9 or& values greater than11
x < 9 or& x > 11
