Exercise 14 Page 377

When a line intersects two or more lines, it is called a transversal and it forms eight angles. Let's recall the names of the different angles that are formed.

Name Definition
Interior Angles Angles that lie inside the lines.
Exterior Angles Angles that lie outside the lines.
Alternate Interior Angles Interior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal. When the lines are parallel, their measures are equal.
Alternate Exterior Angles Exterior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal. When the lines are parallel, their measures are equal.
Corresponding Angles Angles that are in the same position on the two lines in relation to the transversal. When the lines are parallel, their measures are equal.

We are given a diagram that shows two lines being cut by a transversal. We are asked to identify and as alternate interior, alternate exterior, or corresponding.

angles

We can see that and are angles that are in the same position on the lines in relation to the transversal. Therefore, they are corresponding angles.
