Exercise 116 Page 196

Practice makes perfect
a To find y for a specific x-value we substitute the value into the expression instead of x, then simplify using the order of operations.
y=-1/3x-5
y=-1/3*( -3)-5
y=--3/3-5
y=3/3-5
y=1-5
y=-4
b Once again we substitute x=-3 into the equation and the we simplify using the order of operations.
y=2x^2-3x-2
y=2*( -3)^2-3*( -3)-2
y=2*9-3*( -3)-2
y=18+9-2
y=25
c As y is not isolated we start by using inverse operations to isolate y.
2x-5y=4
-5y=4-2x
y=4-2x/-5
Now that y is isolated, we can substitute x=-3 into the equation. We can then use the order of operations to simplify.
y=4-2x/-5
y=4-2*( -3)/-5
y=4+6/-5
y=10/-5
y=-2
