Exercise 8 Page 190

Are the equations in y=mx+b form? What information can this form of an equation give us?

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

To graph the given equations, we should start by using the y=mx+b form of each equation to identify the key features of their graphs. y= mx+ b In this equation, m is the growth factor and b is the y-intercept. Let's rewrite each of the equations in the system in y=mx+b form, highlighting the m and b values.

Given Equation y=mx+b Form Growth Factor m y-intercept b
y=- 4x+3 y= - 4x+ 3 - 4 (0, 3)
y=x-7 y= 1x- 7 1 (0, 7)

To graph these equations, we plot their y-intercepts and use their growth factors to find another point on the line. Then we can connect the points with a straight line.

We can see that the lines intersect at exactly one point.

The point of intersection at (2,-5).
