What can you do to isolate a variable in an inequality?

Practice makes perfect
Inequalities can be solved in the same way as equations, by performing inverse operations on both sides until the variable is isolated. The only difference is that when we divide or multiply by a negative number, we must reverse the inequality sign.

Divide by -8 and flip inequality sign

y ≥ 40/-8

Put minus sign in front of fraction

y ≥ -40/8

Calculate quotient

y ≥ - 5
The above tells us that all values of y that are greater than or equal to - 5 will satisfy the inequality. Below we graph the inequality. Notice that y can equal - 5, which we show with a closed circle on the number line.
