a Examining the table, we see that the male's running times are all less than the female's running times. With this we can make a conjecture.

Conjecture: & The 1-mile running times of the &males are, on average, faster than &the running times of the females.

Notice that we wrote on average and not always as there will definitely be some women that outrun some men.
b What we observe in the table is not a universal fact but a pattern based on one set of data. Therefore, we used inductive reasoning to form our conjecture.
