Exercise 13 Page 491

The law of detachment says that if the hypothesis of a true conditional statement is true, then the conclusion is also true.

If you study for a test, then you will get an A.
If you train for a race, then you will win first place.

Practice makes perfect
The law of detachment says that if the hypothesis of a true conditional statement is true, then the conclusion is also true. In other words, if the hypothesis happens, then the conclusion will definitely also happen. Consider the following hypothesis and conclusion.

If& you study for a test, then& you will get an A. If the law of detachment was true for this statement, you would be guaranteed an A if you study. However, even though you study for a test it does not guarantee that you will get an A. A similar statement can be formed. If& you train for a race , then& you will win first place. While you may train for a race, another person may still take first place.
