Exercise 8 Page 41

Describe the parent function, then graph the functions in one coordinate plan.

Graph:

Transformation: A vertical translation 3 units up.

Practice makes perfect

The given function is constant, so its parent function is y=1. We will start by graphing both functions in one coordinate plan. Then we will compare them to describe the transformation.

Graphing the Functions

Let's plot the functions! Notice that we will get two horizontal lines. The first line will be passing through every point that has a y-coordinate of 1, and every point with a y-coordinate of 4 will be involved in the second one.

Comparing the Functions

Having drawn our functions, we can describe the transformation.

We see that each y-value is being shifted 3 units up. This is a vertical translation.
