Exercise 8 Page 1

To add or subtract fractions they need to have the same denominator.

3 12

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
-1 56 -(1* 6+5/6) -11/6
5 13 5* 3+1/3 16/3
When adding or subtracting fractions they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. -11/6 + 16/3 Since 6 is a multiple of 3, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 163 by 2 to create a common denominator.
-11/6+16/3
-11/6+16*2/3*2
-11/6+32/6
-11/6+32/6
-11+32/6
21/6
