Exercise 5 Page 1

To add or subtract fractions they need to have the same denominator.

-3/4

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
7 34 7* 4+3/4 31/4
-8 12 -(8* 2+1/2) -17/2
When adding or subtracting fractions they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 31/4 + (-17/2) Since 4 is a multiple of 2, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of - 172 by 2 to create a common denominator.
31/4+(-17/2)
31/4+(-17*2/2*2)
31/4+(-34/4)
31/4-34/4
31-34/4
- 3/4
