Exercise 1 Page 653

Recall the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent.

Trigonometric ratios

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to complete the following sentence.

Sine, cosine, and tangent are ?.

To do this, let's recall the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent.

Term Definition Ratio
Sine The ratio between the lengths of the opposite side and the hypotenuse in a right triangle for a specific angle. sin(θ)=opposite/hypotenuse
Cosine The ratio between the lengths of the adjacent side and the hypotenuse in a right triangle for a specific angle. cos(θ)=adjacent/hypotenuse
Tangent The ratio between the lengths of the opposite side and the adjacent side in a right triangle for a specific angle. tan(θ)=opposite/adjacent

As we can see, each of these concepts represents some kind of ratio of side lengths in a right triangle. Therefore, these are trigonometric ratios.

Sine, cosine, and tangent are trigonometric ratios.
