We need to think what we can do to the first inequality to get it to its second and equivalent form. 36≤-4+y ⇒ ? ⇒ 40≤ y Notice that in the second inequality x is isolated. To achieve this, we can undo the negative number addition in the first inequality by adding the same quantity to both sides.

36≤-4+y

LHS+4≤RHS+4

36+4≤ -4+y+4
