To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side using the Properties of Equality. In this case, we will start by combining like terms on the left-hand side.

2y+0.5y+4.5=17

Add terms

2.5y+4.5=17

LHS-4.5=RHS-4.5

2.5y+4.5-4.5=17-4.5

Subtract terms

2.5y=12.5

.LHS /2.5.=.RHS /2.5.

2.5y/2.5=12.5/2.5

Calculate quotient

y=5

The solution to the equation is y=5. We can check our solution by substituting it into the original equation.

2y+0.5y+4.5=17

y= 5

2( 5)+0.5( 5)+4.5? =17

Multiply

10+2.5+4.5? =17

Add terms

17=17

Since the left-hand side is equal to the right-hand side, our solution is correct.
