Exercise 10 Page 77

Instead of adding a negative number, you can subtract.

- 7/15

Practice makes perfect
Let's perform the addition. Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting its positive counterpart.
1/5 + ( - 2/3 )
1/5 - 2/3
When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. Since 3 is not a multiple of 5, we have to multiply both the numerator and denominator of 15 by 3 and 23 by 5, to create a common denominator.
1/5 - 2/3
1 * 3/5 * 3 - 2/3
1 * 3/5 * 3 - 2 * 5/3 * 5
3/15 - 10/15
Now that we have a common denominator, we can proceed to simplifying the expression.
3/15 - 10/15
3-10/15
- 7/15
- 7/15
