Exercise 39 Page 790

1/6

Practice makes perfect
When calculating probability, you are comparing the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes. To calculate the probability that a spinner would land on a number five we should use the Probability Formula. P=Favorable Outcomes/Possible Outcomes Now, we can look at the spinner and find the number of possible outcomes.

There are 6 numbers on the spinner, which is also the number of possible outcomes. To find favorable outcomes, we should calculate how many outcomes result in a spinner landing on number 5.

Out of these, there is 1 such an outcome, which is also the number of favorable outcomes. Now, we have enough information to calculate P(5).
P=Favorable Outcomes/Possible Outcomes
P(5)=1/6
The probability of a spinner landing on a number five is 16, which can be also written as 1:6.
