3. Operations with Radical Expressions
Continue to next subchapter

Exercise 1 Page 479

Use the Distributive Property to combine the radical expressions.

9sqrt(5)

Practice makes perfect
Radicals can only be added or subtracted when they have like radicands. asqrt(x)+bsqrt(x)=(a+b)sqrt(x) asqrt(x)-bsqrt(x)=(a-b)sqrt(x) Since in our exercise all of the radicands are alike, we will use the Distributive Property to perform the addition.
3sqrt(5) + 6sqrt(5)
(3+6)sqrt(5)
9sqrt(5)
