a The illustration shows a cross section with a piece of clay in the shape of a rectangular prism cut in half.

The cross section is parallel to the two faces of a rectangular prism. Therefore, it is a rectangle.

b Take notice that there are three edges to each vertex of the rectangle. Therefore, to get a triangular cross section we should slice a vertex, as done in the illustration.
