Find the greatest common factor. Then, divide the number of students by the GCF.
J
We have three different numbers and three different types of groups. We need to use the greatest common factor to break the groups up evenly and into as many groups as possible. Let's look at the prime factorization of each number.
| Number | Prime factors |
|---|---|
| 12 | 2 * 2 * 3 |
| 90 | 2 * 3 * 3 * 5 |
| 36 | 2 * 2 * 3 * 3 |
Let's find the greatest common factor by combining the common factors from all three numbers. We have common prime factors of 2 and 3. cc GCF(12,90,36) &=& 2* 3 &=&6 We can make 6 groups with the same number of teachers, students and parent volunteers in each group. Since there are 90 students, we can put 906 = 15 students in each group.
