Numerical Expressions

Concept

Numeric Expression

A numeric expression, or numerical expression, is a sequence of mathematical operations that only involves numbers. Consider the following examples.

Example Is It a Numeric Expression?
5+3-2*8
(9+12)^3 -4* 7
3/7 + [(5-1)* (7+ 4)]^5 - 1/7
9w^2+4s+7 *
1125 *

The first examples have operations that only involve numbers. On the other hand, the fourth example is not a numeric expression because it has variables, which makes it an algebraic expression. The final example does not have any operations at all — it is just a single number. This means that the example is not an expression.
