Exercise 9 Page 128

Practice makes perfect

We are given the circle graph that shows the pie sales during one week for Polly's Pies and we want to find what fraction of pies sold was apple. Let's take a look at the graph and find the percent of apple pies.

Pie chart diagram where apples are 42 percents, peanut butter is 8 percents, banana is 27 percents, chockolate is 11 percents, strawberry is 12 percents
We can see that 42 % of pies sold were apple pies. We want to write this percent as a fraction. To do so, we write the number part as a numerator over 100. 42 % = 42/100 Finally, we can simplify this fraction by dividing the numerator and the denominator by 2.
42/100
42/2/100/2
21/50
We found that 2150 of the pies sold were apple pies.
We are given the circle graph that shows the pie sales during one week for Polly's Pies and we want to write the fraction of strawberry pies sold as a decimal. Let's take a look at the graph and find the percent of strawberry pies.
Pie Sales
We can see that 12 % of pies sold were strawberry pies. We want to write this percent as a decimal. To write a percent as a decimal, we ignore the percent symbol and move the decimal point two places to the left.
percent as decimal: 0.12
We found that 0.12 of pies sold were strawberry pies.
