Exercise 14 Page 200

Practice makes perfect
We will sketch the graph of the relationship between the total number of runs and innings. We are given two variables. l x-variable: Innings y-variable: Total number of runs

Let's look at the given information.

  • The team scores the same number of runs for the first 4 innings, so the total number of runs increases constantly.
  • After that the team does not score a run for 5 innings, so the number of runs remains the same for the rest of the game.

By using this information we can sketch the graph.

We will identify how the graph changes if the innings in which the team scores runs changes. Let's consider that after the first 4 innings, the team scores the same number of runs. In addition to this, let the number of runs be less than the number of runs for the first 4 innings.

Notice that the number of runs increases but the rate of change is smaller than the rate of change of the number of runs for the first 4 innings. Also note that this is a sample graph. We can make a different change in the innings and the graph can change differently.
