Exercise 5 Page 379

To write a percent as a fraction, write the number part as a numerator over 100. To write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the percent symbol.

Example Fraction: 1/200
Decimal: 0.005

Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a percent as a fraction and as a decimal. Let's do these things one at a time.

Fraction

To write a percent as a fraction, we write the number part as a numerator over 100. 0.5 %=0.5/100Then, if possible, we simplify the fraction.
0.5/100
0.5* 2/100* 2
1/200
We found that 0.5 % expressed as a fraction is 1200.

Decimal

To write a percent as a decimal, we ignore the percent symbol and move the decimal point two places to the left.
percent as decimal: 0.005
We found that 0.5 % expressed as a decimal is 0.005.
