Exercise 6 Page 378

To write a percent as a fraction, write the number part as a numerator over 100. To write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the percent symbol.

Example Fraction: 7/100
Decimal: 0.07

Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a percent as a fraction and as a decimal. Let's do these things one at a time.

Fraction

To write a percent as a fraction, we write the number part of the numerator over 100.

7 %=7/100 This fraction cannot be simplified any further because 7 and 100 do not share any common factors. This means that 7 % expressed as a fraction is 7100.

Decimal

To write a percent as a decimal, we ignore the percent symbol and move the decimal point two places to the left.
percent as decimal: 0.38
We found that 7 % expressed as a decimal is 0.07.
