Remember, only like terms can be combined.

3 34x+1 12

Practice makes perfect
The first step in simplifying this expression is to identify which, if any, terms can be combined. Remember, only like terms — constant terms or terms with the same variable — can be combined. 3/4x + 2 + 3x - 1/2 In this case, we have two x-terms and two constants. Both the x-terms and the constants can be combined. To simplify the expression we will rearrange it according to the Distributive Property to combine the like terms.
3/4x+2+3x-1/2
3/4x+3x+2-1/2
(3/4+3)x+2-1/2
â–Ľ
Simplify
(3/4+4* 3/4)x+2-1/2
(3/4+4* 3/4)x+2*2/2-1/2
(3/4+12/4)x+4/2-1/2
15/4x+3/2
â–Ľ
Write fraction as a mixed number
12+3/4x+2+1/2
(12/4+3/4)x+2/2+1/2
(3+3/4)x+1+1/2
3 34x+1 12
