Exercise 14 Page 11

What are some common characteristics of a shape?

Example Solution:
Q1: What is the number of vertices?
Q2: What are the angle's measures?
Q3: What are the sides length?

Practice makes perfect

There are certain characteristics of a shape that can be used to classify it. Let's consider a couple that we can use to determine the teacher's chosen shape. Keep in mind that there are many other factors we could use, and these are just some examples.

  • The number of vertices
  • The size of the angles
  • The length of the sides

Number of Vertices

Depending on the number of vertices, we can classify the shape as a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon... etc.

Size of Angles

When we know what type of polygon it is, we should ask about the size of the angles. For example, if it is a triangle we will know what type of triangle it is: obtuse, right, or acute. For a quadrilateral, we will know if it is a rectangle, a trapezoid, or any other shape. For polygons with more than four vertices, we will know if it is regular or not.

Length of Sides

In the case of a triangle, the size of the angles will tell us everything we need to know about what type of triangle it is. However, when it comes to a quadrilateral we also need to know the length of the sides in order to classify it as a square or not.
