Exercise 109 Page 454

Practice makes perfect
a Examining the line of best fit and the correlation coefficient, we see that there is a negative association between the recorded miles and the heart rate. However, observing the r-value, we see a coefficient that is close to 0, which means the association is very weak.
b What can we say about D, F, N, O and P? Two of the runners are fast and are helping the team, D and F, while three are slow and are hurting the team, N, O and P.

Fast runners

Of the two faster runners, D and F, one of them puts in a lot of effort while the other puts in little effort. We know this by looking at their heart rate. The one putting in little effort should probably be spoken to.

Slow runners

Of the slow runners, N and O are not putting in a lot of effort at all while, P is putting in a lot of effort. Unfortunately, P should probably be cut from the team and N and O should be given a reprimand.
