Exercise 26 Page 153

Lines in the same plane that do not intersect are parallel lines.

No, see solution.

Practice makes perfect

We are given two linear equations. y=0, x= 0 Let's draw each line in the same coordinate plane.

Remember that parallel lines have the same slope. To find the slope of each line, we will use the Slope Formula. m = y_2-y_1/x_2-x_1 Now, let's choose two points on the blue line. We will use ( 0, 0) and ( 0, 1) in the above formula to find the slope of the blue line.

m = y_2-y_1/x_2-x_1
m=1- 0/0- 0
m=1/0

This means that the slope of the line x=0 is undefined. Next, we can do the same for two points on the red line. This time we will choose ( 0, 0) and ( 1, 0) to put into the Slope Formula.

m=y_2-y_1/x_2-x_1
m=0- 0/1- 0
m=0/1

0/a=0

m=0

The slopes of the lines are not the same. Therefore, the lines are not parallel, as we saw when we graphed the lines.

Linear Equations
A linear equation is an equation whose graph is a line.

This type of equation contains at least one linear term and any number of constants. Let's see a few examples! & y=2x+1, & 3x=6 +3, & 2y+x=4 For those of you who are interested in learning more about the different types of linear equations and their graphs, you can read more about them on the following pages.
