Exercise 3 Page 477

Discuss the use of a single box and multiple boxes in a flowchart.

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

A flowchart is a visual representation of a proof, where each step shows the proof's progression. Depending on what step you want to show, you either have a single box or multiple boxes.

Single Box

A single box is used when we are manipulating a single statement. For example, the Addition Property of Equality would show up as a single box leading to another box.

Multiple Boxes

Multiple boxes are used when we are combining two or more statements to form a third statement. For example, if we substitute a variable in a statement with a variable from another statement, we use two boxes that merge into one.
