f(x)=y In this notation (x,f(x)) is a point on the graph of the function. We will use this to determine the coordinates given by the statement f(5) is equal to 9. We can write this in function notation. f(5)=9 From f(x)=y we can see that x=5 and y=9. Therefore, the point given by the statement is (5,9).
b The given statement is A solution of the equation f(n)=- 3 is 5. We can write this in function notation.
f(5)=- 3 From f(x)=y, we can see that x=5 and y=- 3. Therefore, the point given by the statement is (5,- 3).
