Exercise 8 Page 63

Use inverse operations until you have fully isolated x.

x=- 4y+3

Practice makes perfect
To solve the given literal equation for x, we will use the Properties of Equality to apply inverse operations on the equation. Remember, only like terms can be combined. Since the inverse operation to addition is subtraction, to eliminate 20y we have to subtract 20y from both sides of the equation.
20y+5x=15
20y+5x - 20y=15 - 20y
5x=15-20y
Next, we have to eliminate 5 from in front of x. Division is the inverse operation to multiplication, so we have to divide both sides of the equation by 5.
5x=15-20y
5x/5= 15-20y/5
x=15-20y/5
Simplify right-hand side
x=15/5-20y/5
x=3-4y
x=- 4y+3
