Exercise 17 Page 117

Use inverse operations until you have fully isolated x.

x=5

Practice makes perfect
To solve the equation, we have to isolate x on one side using inverse operations. To begin with, we want to collect all of the constants on one side of the equation. The inverse operation to addition is subtraction, so to eliminate 22 we have to subtract 22 from both sides of the equation.
15x+22=7x+62
15x+22 - 22=7x+62 - 22
15x=7x+40
Next, we have to eliminate 7x from the right-hand side. As before, to eliminate it we will subtract 7x from both sides of the equation.
15x=7x+40
15x - 7x=7x+40 - 7x
8x=40
Finally, we have to eliminate the 8 from in front of x. Since multiplication and division are inverse operations, we have to divide by 8.
8x=40
8x/8=40/8
x=5
