Exercise 5 Page 591

Use the formula for the area of a triangle.

2 cm

Practice makes perfect
We are looking for the base of a triangle. We can do this by using the formula for calculating the area of a triangle. A=1/2bh Now we substitute the value of the area, A= 12, and the value of the height, h= 12, into the formula to calculate b.
A=1/2bh
12 = 1/2b( 12)
Solve for b
24 = 12b
12b = 24
b = 2
The base of the triangle is 2 cm.
