1. Parent Functions and Transformations
Sign In
Describe the parent function and then graph the functions in one coordinate plan.
Graph:
Transformation: A vertical translation 2 units up.
The given function is constant, so its parent function is y=1. We will start by graphing both functions in one coordinate plan. Then we will compare them to describe the transformation.
Now let's plot the functions! Notice that we will get two horizontal lines. The first line will pass through every point that has a y-coordinate of 1, and the second line will pass through every point with a y-coordinate of 3.
Having drawn our functions, we can describe the transformation.
We see that each y-value is being shifted 2 units up. This is a vertical translation.
