Let's examine the graph below for the different values of a, greater than zero.
We see that the graph of f(x)=ax^2 is narrower than the graph of g(x)=x^2 only if a > 1. For 0 < a < 1, the graph is wider. Therefore, the graph of f is sometimes narrower than the graph of the other function.
